Jekyll-Hyde Cover Talk: A Classics Challenge April Prompt
Having missed the March prompt for November’s Autumn’s A Classics Challenge, right now I’m excited about the April prompt which is focusing on the book cover.
I just finished reading Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the translated version into my native language, Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian language).
This is the cover of the translated version:
And here are the questions:
What are your first impressions as you look at the cover? Does the book cover have an aspect that reflects the character, setting, or plot of the novel? If you could have designed the book cover what would you have chosen?
My answers:
The dark aura of the book cover clearly states that this is a mystery novel. On the left side we can see a silhouette of a gentleman standing beside a door (or is it a wall?), while on the other side of the door, there lies a shadow of another man, someone smaller than the other, looking mysterious and evil by the way he hides himself behind the door (or wall), as if he’s waiting to sprung out. I think the cover reflects the story and the main characters quite good, and I like it. However, another way to show Jekyll-Hyde in a book cover, I think, would be to picture them as one (rather than two separate objects). And although I like the entirety of the translated version’s cover, I’m not really comfortable with the boundary between Jekyll and Hyde. Because in the story Jekyll and Hyde were not separated by a wall, but Hyde lives inside Jekyll and at some point breaks free and defeated Jekyll. If there was a boundary at all I think it would be a curtain, nothing too solid or thick. Anyway, the cover designer, Satya Utama Jadi, also designed covers for many other books, including the Indonesian version of Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Hector Malot’s Sans Famille (Nobody’s Boy).
This graphic novel cover did the job well:
I also did a little browsing on other editions’ covers, and with various degrees of creepiness (I call most of them creepy), they successfully convey the message about the essence of the book: mystery.
[Reading Challenge 2012] World War I
Reading Challenge ini dihost oleh War Through the Generations.
Rules:
The challenge will run from January 1, 2012, through December 31, 2012.
This year you have options when reading your fiction, nonfiction, graphic novels, etc. with the WWI as the primary or secondary theme.
Books can take place before, during, or after the war, so long as the conflicts that led to the war or the war itself are important to the story. Books from other challenges count so long as they meet the above criteria.
Dip: Read 1-3 books in any genre with WWI as a primary or secondary theme.
Wade: Read 4-10 books in any genre with WWI as a primary or secondary theme.
Swim: Read 11 or more books in any genre with WWI as a primary or secondary theme.
Additionally, we’ve decided that since there are so many great movies out there about WWI, you can substitute or add a movie or two to your list this year and have it count toward your totals.
You can decide which books you’d like to read right away, or you can choose them during the course of the challenge. Check out the Recommended Reading: WWI page for suggestions.
***
- The Given Day by Dennis Lehane
- A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway
- War Horse by Michael Morpurgo

[Classics Challenge 2012] February – Character Claude Frollo (Level 1&2)

Posting asli: di sini.
Character - CLAUDE FROLLO (The Hunchback of Notre Dame)
Level 1
What phrases has the author used to introduce this character?
-hal. 107
What are your first impressions of them?
Find a portrait or photograph that closely embodies how you imagine them.
Level 2
How has the character changed?
Has your opinion of them altered?
Ya.
Are there aspects of their character you aspire to? or hope never to be?
What are their strengths and faults?
Do you find them believable? If not, how could they have been molded so?
Would you want to meet them?
Hmmm, tidak, terima kasih.
[Reading Challenge 2012] Back to the Classics
Lagi-lagi challenge…

- Challenge runs from January 1, 2012 through December 31, 2012. Books started before January 1st do not count, and all links/reviews/comments for each category must be posted in the correct place by December 31st. Feel free to join in at any time, but the end date is December 31.

- Please sign up for the Challenge using the linky list (or comment section if you do not have a blog/website). If you would be so kind, please spread the word about this challenge by creating a post on your blog/website and link back to this sign up page.
- Once the Challenge has begun, you will see a new bar on the left hand side of this blog. This will list the places for you to link/comment your reviews of the book you have read for each category as well as a “wrap up” page. I will not be doing monthly check-in posts this year. I will probably do a “Half Way” post in June. These will be important because….
- THERE IS A PRIZE THIS YEAR! People who complete the challenge (and I will check that all categories are completed!) will be entered into a random drawing for $30 worth of books (Book Depository will be used for an International Winner). I may have other prizes as well. Make sure you are following me via GFC, Email, Twitter, or Facebook/Networked Blogs so you are in the know!

[Reading Challenge 2012] Name in a Book
Karena Mbak Fanda, teman sesama penggila buku yang menjadi host challenge ini, dan syaratnya juga nggak terlalu sulit, so count me in!
Name In A Book Challenge 2012

The Mysterious Benedict Society).
3. Boleh nama lengkap, boleh nama panggilan, tapi bukan nama sandi (mis. The Day of the Jackal).
