Weigh in Wednesday [1]: Contemporary vs. Fantasy

Thanks to Lauren of Epilogue Review for inviting me to join this weekly meme of her blog!

Weigh in Wednesday is a meme which is strictly a Something vs. Something type of thing. The purpose is for it to be short, interactive, and something fun to do halfway through the week!

The topic this week is:

Contemporary vs. Fantasy

I found out that there are many ways in defining “contemporary literature”, but if  it is matched with Fantasy, then I will assume that “Contemporary” is literature based on reality or real events, while “Fantasy” is literature based on imagination.

My Answer: I’d certainly go for contemporary. I still love certain fantasy books, though. I  made exceptions for Harry Potter series and Kate DiCamillo’s children’s books. And I still read classic fantasy like The Wizard of Oz and The Wind in the Willows.

I like stories that have strong moral values, and I would have to say I seldom find it in most fantasy novels. I’m always looking more than just adventure, mystery and romance. I want books that could hit me hard in the heart, shock my mind, shower me with knowledge, and transform me into a better human being. Yeah, I know, that’s a bit deep, but those things are what I look for in a book. I read books not merely to get entertained, but to learn and to be changed. Maybe this explains my passion for Classics and Historical Fiction novels. 🙂

So, for me, fantasy is OK every now and then, but novels based on reality are so much better.

What about you? Are you a fan of contemporary or fantasy novels? Let Lauren know with linking your post of WiW here.

  1. Other than that, we can easily absorbed in somebody else’s life in contemporary books, to learn how they react/think on/about certain circumstances, while it’s really difficult for me to ‘get in’ to a vampire or werewolf, and I am really not interested to know what they feel or think about their lives 😀

    1. Thanks, Laura. I thought it would be ambiguous if I didn’t define the meaning of Contemporary and Fantasy first. If you like both then read both! 🙂
