There are many wonderful adaptations from books out there (along with some not-so-wonderful ones) and I am grateful that the world’s film industry keeps producing new ones, and that these past few years movies based on books get the appreciation they deserve. (Did you notice that Oscar nominations these past few years have been positively dominated by movies based on books?)
So here are some movies based on books I really want to watch (trailer featured if already available). You will see many period dramas here, because I read mostly classics and historical fiction books, so naturally I’m drawn to period dramas.
Cinderella. A live-action take of the classic fairy tale. Cast: Lily James, Richard Madden, Cate Blanchett, and Helena Bonham Carter (I know. Impressive cast. I hope it’s better than Into The Woods.)
Testament of Youth. Set on the First World War, based on Vera Brittain’s memoir. Cast: Alicia Vikander, Kit Harington, Miranda Richardson and Taron Egerton.
Suite Française. Based on the unfinished novel by Irene Nemirovsky. Cast: Michelle Williams, Kristin Scott Thomas and Matthias Schoenaerts.
Far from the Madding Crowd. Based on Thomas Hardy’s classic romance. Cast: Carey Mulligan, Matthias Schoenaerts, Tom Sturridge, and Michael Sheen. This movie is by far the one I want most to watch, as soon as it premieres.
Madame Bovary. Based on Gustave Flaubert’s novel. Cast: Mia Wasikowska, Ezra Miller, Laura Carmichael.
Macbeth. An adaptation of the Shakespeare play. Cast: Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, David Thewlis, Sean Harris and Elizabeth Debicki.
Mr. Holmes. From the novel A Slight Trick of the Mind by Mitch Cullin. Stars Ian McKellen as the aged sleuth.
I owe this post by The Lady and the Rose. Thanks!
Do you have movie recommendations for me? Especially period drama movies from the non-fiction section? Do tell on the comments!
